What is entailed in being a caseworker?
Undergraduate caseworkers have the most continuous interaction with our clients, remaining with the client throughout the medical and public health processes, building a relationship with the client, and advocating for his/her needs. While undergraduates do not perform medical procedures, there is tremendous opportunity to observe and learn from the medical students and attending physician as well as from the clients themselves.
Currently, we train undergraduate students through the Community Health Sciences 187A/B courses at UCLA in Fall and Winter, respectively (non-student participants are welcome to audit). This service learning course is designed for students to learn about health and social needs/services from primarily a public health perspective, drawing on other related academic and professional disciplines. In the service portion of the course, students will be trained to function as caseworkers and committee members. Though the classes are only offered 2 quarters, the committees are a full year commitment; they include Logistics, Referrals, Grant Writing, Health Education, Mental Health, and more. Classes begin Fall 2007, and enrollment is by application only.
Caseworker application is currently closed. The next application cycle begins in next year Spring Quarter. Thank you for your applications.
